Accessibility plan
it's easier than you think
Accessibility planning is easier than you think; don't stress out about it.
When you create an event, make sure you have a sign-up form for students to RSVP. On the form, have a place for people to type in whether they have accessibility needs or dietary restrictions.
This way, you'll know in advance how many students need accommodations + what their needs are (e.g. wheelchair, eyesight, hearing, etc.).
location scout
Location scout: do a "walk-through" from the entrance of the building to the room where the event is.
Pretend you're in their shoes and do a mental "walk-through" to figure out how you would get to the event location, and what you would do when you get there.
Note down the following:
What building entrance to use
Elevators, ramps, and automatic doors
Washroom: Find and note the location of the closest accessible washroom, in case they have to use it
If you have questions
If you are usure about how to accommodate or plan for the student with disabilities, the YorkU Student Accessibility Services office will be happy to help. They may also help you get additional to help cover costs (e.g. for trip events where you may need to rent a bus with a ramp).
Send the accessibility notes to students on guest list with accessibility -- or -- have UPSC exec members waiting to escort students requiring assistance to the room location
